The Differences Between Silicone &Other Sex Toy Materials

Updated: Dec 3, 2025

Silicone has rapidly become the gold standard for modern sex toys, and for good

reason.

Platinum cure silicone is non-porous and hypoallergenic, unlike many traditional

materials such as jelly rubber, PVC, or low-grade plastics.

This means it won’t harbour bacteria or body fluids in microscopic crevices, and it

can be cleaned thoroughly with warm, soapy water, boiling water (if no electronic

components are present), or a 10% bleach solution without the material degrading;

just be sure to rinse before use.

By contrast, porous materials like jelly rubber or “cyberskin” feel soft and lifelike to

the touch but absorb oils and moisture, creating breeding grounds for bacteria and

requiring careful and often impractical cleaning to remain hygienic.

Beyond cleanliness, silicone’s texture is remarkably smooth and consistent. While

some users may prefer the squishiness of jelly toys, silicone can be formulated in a

range of firmness levels from velvety soft to delightfully firm without ever feeling

sticky or tacky.

High‑quality silicone retains temperature well, allowing for warming or cooling play

that plastic or rubber can’t match.

ABS plastic, common in many rigid vibrators, is body‑safe and easy to sanitize but

offers a harder, more clinical sensation than silicone’s gentle give.

Durability is another strong suit: silicone resists tears, scratches, and discolouration

far better than rubber or soft plastics. It also holds up against most toy cleaners and

lubricants; just be sure to use water‑based lube, as silicone‑based lubricants can

degrade silicone toys over extended periods.

For those seeking alternative experiences, materials like borosilicate glass, anodized

aluminium, or polished wood offer unparalleled firmness and temperature versatility

but demand more care to avoid chips or splinters.

In summary, while each material brings its own feel and aesthetic, silicone’s

unbeatable combination of body safety, ease of cleaning, durability, and tactile

flexibility makes it the preferred choice for anyone prioritizing hygiene and longevity

in their intimate products.

This is why John Thomas Toys only uses platinum cure silicone for its toy designs.
