ALL THINGS ANAL – THE NEXT STEP
So we covered a lot in our first blog – it wasn’t just a beginners guide, but included preparation, cleaning, safe play and aftercare. If you want to brush up on any of these then take a quick look back to refresh.

Once you are comfortable with anal play and have decided that you definitely would like to take it to the next step, there are many avenues to take you there:
With a Partner. Maybe you have a partner with whom you are most comfortable and have agreed that this journey is just for the two of you.
As a Traveller. Maybe you want to explore this journey with others and learn from their expertise; there are social platforms you can find partners on either as a ‘meet up’ or as a professional.
On Your Own. For some this is a deeply personal journey and one you want to make alone. There are many aids for this, from fuck machines to bounce chairs. TIP if you are a lone player, we recommend that you arrange a communication with someone after your play; tell someone you are calling them or meeting them so if you don’t – someone knows to check up on you.
Whatever you choose you will find help here. There are two types of anal training: depth training and stretching. Whilst they are not mutually exclusive of each other, they both offer a different perspective.
Depth training is for those who want to go deep – this does normally include an element of stretching, but the yearning for depth requires graduation in depth.
Stretching is for those who are concentrating on the feeling that the stretch offers and maybe depth is not a primary focus.
For most, there will be a bit of both. At John Thomas we have toys that concentrate on depth only, stretching only, and toys that incorporate both styles of play.
We have many Depth Trainers that are not going to stretch the anus - the best being the Colon Snake. This will most easily navigate the sigmoid bend and give you the feeling of extreme penetration. If stretching is your primary goal, then go for something like the Twisted which has minimal depth to maximum stretch ratio. But whatever you choose, start small. This is, after all, a journey. Enjoy each step and take your time to take pleasure in each new sensation.
Preparation
Step 1: As with all things anal – lube is your friend. When you are working with larger toys (or limbs) then you need much more liberal quantities of lube, and this is where the powder forms are much more economical – we recommend either X-Lube or Fuck and Fist for this purpose. You will find yourself re-applying so make sure you have plenty nearby for easy access.
Step 2: Sizing up in small increments is essential. As we said before, start small, keep a note of each stage and never advance too quick. All our toys are clearly specified with their dimension, and you should compare these to previous toys before sizing up. It is important to note that we do not recommend sizing up with just one of our toys – because it would be very boring to have the exact same toy in each size. We have different toys for each kind of play, so that sizing up might mean a journey through a number of different toys. For example, the Sea Gorgon is not going to be the starting point for anyone – not even in size Small. This toy has been designed for extreme players, and our small is for someone experienced. Working between Twisted, Bob's Builder and Whopper is a good range of sizes for stretching. We will be posting blogs on our products and their sizes – so keep an eye out!
Step 3: Each session begins with a warmup. We recommend you never dive straight in to play with a large toy; you will need a range of toys that you can use for your warmup to get to your last toy of the session. Depending on where you are in your journey, you may need to work through four or five toys in one session to get you to the last toy. And remember, your maximum toy might be the same for a number of sessions before you are ready for the next size.
Step 4: Whether you are working with a partner’s arm, fuck machine, bounce chair, toys etc, make sure they are all clean and in good working order first. We recommend giving any equipment and toys that you plan to use a quick look over before use to check for any wear or damage that might make your gear unsafe.
Step 5: Gather your aftercare, and make sure you have everything nearby for when you finish – this could be from medical supplies (just in case) to an ice pack. When you are pushing your body in training, you can expect some soreness afterwards and an ice pack will help reduce inflammation and speed up healing.
Tools of the Trade
There are many things you can use for your journey – alone or with a partner.
Lube – try different ones out before you settle on your favourite. We recommend X Lube and Fuck and Fist for long lasting play. A good lube will help prevent tissue damage and look after your butt in the long run.
Cleaning Equipment – for you and your toys. You don’t want an infection, especially in your rectum, so always use high quality cleaning materials.
Rectal cleaning aids – whether you are using a bulb, water bag, shower head or something else, always make sure they are good quality.
Fuck Machines. There are many fuck machines on the market – look at reviews and research well before finding the right investment for you – they can be expensive.
Waterproof covers and towels. This can be a messy business, even when you have cleaned well, so make sure you have protected the room before play.
Aftercare. Your aftercare kit might include medical supplies, ice packs and healing salves, such as aloe gel or anal moisturisers.
How to Train for Extra Large Toys & Fisting
Following the above, where you train your rectum to accept larger items, will get you to the point where you are ready for extreme play - this involves fisting and extra large toys. So, are you ready to step into the wondrous world of extreme anal play?
Exploring deep anal play is an exciting journey! But first, what is fisting?
Fisting is the act of penetrating the vulva or anus with a hand or fist. It is a popular form of anal play for a variety of reasons, but not one to be entered into lightly. This play needs a partner whom you must trust implicitly as fisting with someone who does not understand or appreciate the delicate nature of where their hand is going can be dangerous – and only to the one accepting the fist.
Exploring the depths of your body is exciting, and of course, the orgasms you can experience are intense and unique to the type of anal play you are engaging in, but you must always do so safely.
How do I play with extra large toys?
You can play with extra large toys and dildos in a variety of ways both on your own and with others. When we say extra large toys, we mean toys with large girths and/or extra depth. Some players like to be fucked by a partner with large dildos while others prefer to suction them to a wall or attach by vac-u-loc to a fuck machine or bounce chair and fuck themselves. Others may prefer extra large toys with wide bases that can stay in place while they do other forms of BDSM play. If you're not sure how you want to explore extra-large toys, searching online for "playing with extra-large dildos" might give you some ideas. Like anal sex, these are not activities you do on a whim. You must be quite familiar with anal play and ready to be patient, stretching and loosening your hole over many sessions to fit those larger sizes.
While the sensations differ between fisting and playing with extra-large toys, training to gape your hole for these forms of play is the same.
Step 1: Ensure you have extensive experience with anal play. Fisting and using extra-large toys are for experts, not beginners. You will risk bleeding and hurting yourself when you practice fisting or use extra-large toys without prior experience in anal play.
Step 2: Advance beyond "anal training kit" sizes. Spend time working your way up to thicker and longer toys, dildos, plugs, etc. It is important at each size stage to spend 'time under tension' while training - see how long you can stay at the maximum stretch, this will help your body accept each increment in size. Recognise the difference between 'training' you body to accept the bigger sizes and then actually enjoying the bigger sizes, however, you might do that.
Step 3: Choose a great lube. Make sure you do research before buying a lube, as not all lubes are suitable for big and long sizes. We highly recommend X Lube and Fuck and Fist, as both are safe to use with silicone toys.
Step 4: If you’re playing with partner(s), be sure to have a thorough negotiation before your session. If you’re new to fisting, depth play, and extra-large toys, we recommend playing with your partner(s) a few times before tackling these forms of anal play to establish trust and explore your dynamic together. Before exploring anal play together, be sure to get consent for all activities through a thorough conversation outside of the bedroom, prior to play. If you’re training to fit larger sizes, we recommend training with your partner(s) so those involved have the opportunity to learn your body well.
Step 5: Thoroughly clean yourself internally before play. This is required if you want to stretch yourself to accommodate bigger and longer sizes. Be sure to deep clean at least two hours before, and do not eat or drink two hours before your session. We recommend placing something easy to clean beneath you when playing with larger sizes. For consistent players, taking a daily fibre pill is a great way to keep yourself cleaned out and quicken any cleaning beforehand. If you’re planning on including fisting in your session, keep your session hygienic and be sure to have your partner(s) wear latex gloves that stretch past the elbow. We recommend douching with a water bag or a shower attachment.
Step 6: Loosen your anus with smaller sex toys. Use previous sizes that you can fit to loosen your anus and warm yourself up before tackling the next size up. It is easy to allow excitement (and horniness) to cloud your vision. Be realistic about what sizes you can take.
Step 7: Keep a diary of your journey in some format. After each session, note what toys worked best to help you stretch, what your maximum depth and width were, and what shape of toy works best for you. What depth you find your sigmoid bend? What works best between your inner and outer sphincter? Don’t forget to keep a note of what you do afterwards; did you need an icepack, how long did it take for your body to recover, sphincter to return to normal, etc. When partaking in this extreme form of play, it is important to become highly acquainted with your body. On days when you don’t have time to play, it can help your mood to read your notes and remind yourself of what fun it is.
SAFETY TIPS
· If there is blood or pain while sizing up, stop playing immediately and let your body recover for at least a day before resuming play.
· Do not use numbing creams if you're a beginner. Using numbing creams too early in your anal play journey could lead to tearing, as you won't be able to listen to when your body is telling you something is wrong. Do not use numbing creams until you have reached your goal size and feel confident in how well you know your body.
· Do not use speculums or hollow plugs while training. However, some use speculums or hollow plugs to stretch and keep their holes open, also known as gaping, to fit bigger toys or fists. Be careful with these toys as they can easily lead to tearing. We do not recommend using speculums or hollow plugs while training.
· Use toys made with PLATINUM grade body safe silicone, steel, or borosilicate glass. Avoid toys produced from jelly, TPE, TPR, or PVC internally. Their porous nature makes it challenging to keep thoroughly clean and will be non body safe.
· When playing on your own. We already mentioned that it's good practice to schedule contact with someone trustworthy for after a session – this may seem extreme, but it's a good safety protocol to follow in case something goes wrong during play. Follow all our cleaning and safety guides and we hope you have a great time.
· When playing as a traveller. There are lots of connections to be made in this fetish world; make sure when you find a new partner, you know they are well experienced and that you have absolute trust in each other. There are many professionals with whom you can visit – these are a safe introduction into travelling.
· When playing with your partner. Communication is key as it is in any relationship, but always make sure you both have a full understanding of the others feelings at all times. When your aftercare routine is complete and you both feel completely at ease, that is when you know you are doing it right. If one or both of you does not feel that way, then you do not engage in it again until your communication has completely eradicated any uneasiness.
